Read MoreIf your idea of a perfect city break is choosing between beach walks, rooftop drinks, or getting lost in old stone alleys… Barcelona’s about to ruin you (in the best way).
I went for one week and quickly realized this city doesn’t make you choose—it hands you all of it at once. Gothic Quarter streets that feel like a movie set, a hotel rooftop overlooking the cathedral, tapas and sangria you’ll dream about later, and a beach you can actually stroll to from the old town.
After a Barcelona city break like this, “normal” weekends away just don’t hit the same.
Barcelona is the rare combo of:
This post is part personal diary, part one week in Barcelona itinerary, and part things to do in Barcelona list you can steal. I’ll walk you through where we stayed, what we did, what I’d repeat in a heartbeat, and a few tips I wish I’d known before we went.

How to Get to the Gothic Quarter from Barcelona Airport (BCN)
Short answer: yes. Longer answer: also yes.
Barcelona ruined other city breaks for me because it has:
If you love long weekends in European cities, be warned: a Barcelona city break (especially one week) sets the bar very high.
For a first-time Barcelona city break, I don’t think you can beat staying in or near the Gothic Quarter.
You’re in the middle of:
We spent most of our time wandering this area and I was SO glad our hotel was right in the middle of it all.
Lamaro Hotel Review – Rooftop Bar Overlooking Barcelona Cathedral
We visited in April and stayed at the Lamaro Hotel, directly across from the Barcelona Cathedral—and it was fantastic.
A few reasons I recommend it:
Think of this as a flexible Barcelona itinerary for 7 days. You don’t have to follow it day by day, but these are the experiences that made the trip unforgettable.
We did a group tour of Sagrada Família, and honestly, I’m glad we didn’t just wander around on our own.
A guided tour:
Afterward, we headed to the Sercotel rooftop bar (pictured above), which overlooks Sagrada Família, and it might be one of the best views in the entire city.
Drinks + skyline + Sagrada rising above the city = unreal.
If you only take one piece of advice from this post, make it this:
Just wander.
We spent so much time simply walking around the Gothic Quarter with no plan, and it was my favorite part of being in Barcelona.
Expect:
If you love photography, this neighborhood will eat up your camera roll in the best way.
We ate tapas all over the city, but one place completely stole our hearts: Perikete.
We loved it so much we:
Why I’d go back again and again:
Important tip:
If you’re collecting ideas for where to eat in Barcelona or searching best tapas in Barcelona, put Perikete at the top of your list.
One of the best parts of Barcelona?
You’re never far from the water.
We took a long walk from the Gothic Quarter down to the beach and marina, and it’s such a nice shift from the tight medieval alleys.
If you like the idea of a Barcelona city break that doesn’t feel boxed in by buildings, this city-beach combo is everything.
One of my favorite nights in Barcelona was when we went to an underground jazz performance at Jamboree.
Picture this:
It felt intimate, atmospheric, and totally different from your typical bar night. If you’re into live music or want a more unique Barcelona nightlife experience, I highly recommend finding a jazz club like this. We’ve never been to a jazz performance (I wouldn’t call us jazz fans) but it was still very cool and a highlight of our trip!
Gaudí’s influence is everywhere, but Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia is one of those “you have to see it in person” buildings.
After your tour, stroll Passeig de Gràcia for:

Even if you’re not a “tour all the landmarks” person, Park Güell is worth the effort.
Try to go in the morning or late afternoon to dodge the harshest sun and biggest crowds.
La Boqueria is touristy, yes. It’s also fun.
Pop into La Boqueria Market for:
Then we did a short walk along Las Ramblas—not somewhere I’d base myself, but worth seeing once as part of a broader things to do in Barcelona list. It is iconic after all!
If you want a different perspective over the city, head up to Montjuïc.
It’s a great way to end a day and appreciate how beautiful Barcelona is from above.
I will never get tired of a good rooftop, and Barcelona delivers:
If you’re building a Barcelona itinerary, sprinkle in at least a couple of rooftop stops—especially around golden hour.
We went in April, and I’d absolutely go that time again.
What it was like:
The only places we really noticed crowds:
If you’re debating when to visit Barcelona, late spring is a sweet spot.
We flew into Barcelona-El Prat (BCN), the main airport most travelers use.
From there, you’ve got a few options to get into the city center.
You can absolutely take:
But after a longer two-week Europe trip and more luggage than I’d like to admit, we decided to just take an Uber to our hotel in/near the Gothic Quarter.
Was it the cheapest choice? No.
Was it the easiest choice with all our stuff? 100%.
If you’re arriving tired, late, or heavily loaded, this might be worth it for you too.
For our ride back to the airport, we had our hotel organize a cab ahead of time.
If your hotel offers this service, I highly recommend using it—especially if you have an early flight.
If you’re staying a full week, you can easily add one or two day trips from Barcelona to break things up.
Day Trip to Girona by Train (The One We Planned but Skipped)
We had planned to take the train from Barcelona to Girona, which is just over an hour away.
Girona is known for:
We ended up skipping it at the end of our two-week Europe trip because we were just out of energy—but honestly, it’s still high on my list for next time.
Montserrat: Monastery in the Mountains
If you want a mix of nature + history, Montserrat is a classic day trip:
You can take a train + cable car or cogwheel railway combo from Barcelona, making it very doable as a day trip.
Sitges: Easy Beach Day Escape
For a quieter beach town vibe, Sitges is a great option:
Costa Brava (If You Have Extra Time)
If your Barcelona trip is longer than a week, consider heading up to the Costa Brava:
Even one day up there feels like stepping into a different world.
Truly: some of the best moments of our trip weren’t planned.
Give yourself time to:
This city rewards curiosity.
Barcelona loves a rooftop and a good meal—and so does everyone else.
Don’t leave your airport transfer to the last minute, especially if:
Ask your hotel if they can organize a cab—it was one of the smoothest parts of our trip.
After one week in Barcelona, I totally get why people come back again and again.
You get:
If you’re building your 2026 Europe itinerary, I’d say:
Add Barcelona to your list and let it ruin every other city break for you—in the best possible way.
Save this as your Barcelona city break guide, use these ideas as your starting point, and build your own version of the perfect week.
